Dental Treatment of a Patient with Dravet syndrome under General Anesthesia

Abstract

|
Associated with mutations of the sodium voltage-gated channel alpha subunit 1 (SCN1A) gene, Dravet syndrome (DS) is characterized by various type of recurrent seizures, beginning within the first year of life. Prolonged febrile seizures often occur in infancy, often caused by fever. Psychomotor disturbance and acute encephalopathy usually appear within the 2 years of age. DS is a central nervous system disease that includes not only epilepsy but also non-epileptic symptoms with intellectual disability, developmental delays, motor deficit, and behavioral disorder. Oral manifestations include delayed tooth eruption, bruxism, and malocclusion. This case report describes considerations for dental treatment under general anesthesia in patients with DS. A 3-year-old girl with DS received dental caries treatments under general anesthesia due to lack of cooperation in dental treatment. As patients with DS often have seizures triggered by fever, caution should be exercised when performing dental treatment and general anesthesia.
